SPECIALISTS

Qualifications 

  • A strong desire and ability to work with children, creating fun, engaging, and safe experiences.

  • The ability to relate to peers and supervisors, accepting guidance with a positive attitude.

  • Preparedness to be spontaneous and silly—sometimes the best moments come from unexpected fun!

  • Exceptional character, integrity, adaptability, enthusiasm, humor, and patience to lead by example.

  • Training and experience in specific specialty activity.

  • Must possess a high school diploma or be at least 18 years of age. Some college preferred.

  • Available to work the entire summer (Monday – Friday, 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM with no more than 4 absences (a 5th absence is allowed for school-related reasons).

  • First Aid and CPR preferred (or willing to obtain before camp).

  • Additional certifications in lifeguarding or specialty activities are a bonus!

  • Understanding and adherence to camp rules, policies, and philosophy.

  • Willingness to participate in training sessions before camp begins.

 General Responsibility

​​The general responsibility for specialists at SCDC revolves around fostering a fun, dynamic, and enriching camp experience. Specialists are tasked with designing and delivering 10 to 15 specialty program lessons, tailored to specific areas like Baking, Arts & Crafts, or Karate. Key expectations include:

  • Program Development:

    • Create and adapt engaging, age-appropriate activities to encourage active camper participation, ensuring they are suitable for age groups 4–13.

    • Adjust activities as needed to accommodate group dynamics or behavior.

  • Leadership and Engagement:

    • Bring energy, passion, and creativity to every session.

    • Ensure campers of all ages are excited and involved.

  • Environment Management:

    • Set up, maintain, and organize the specialty area to support smooth operations.

    • Respond proactively to camper and staff needs with effective problem-solving.

  • Professionalism:

    • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor.

    • Contribute to a positive, team-oriented environment.

  • Camp-Wide Support:

    • Assist with carpool supervision during AM/PM transitions.

    • Help with overall camp setup, cleanup, and preparation for new sessions.

    • Support with early departures during Closing Circle and other transitional moments.

  • Team Participation:

    • Attend and actively contribute to staff meetings and training sessions.
